BALLROOM DANCING - Eric 0410 411 997

(Previously Ballroom Dancing with Waltz-n-tune)

(We advertise in the Saturday Courier Mail under "dances" in the community notices section).

Large modern dance floor (must go, it's a wonderful Saturday night dance). All age's welcome. Improve your dancing by mixing with experienced dancers. Men - come to check out the "good sorts" and ask them for a dance. (Ladies are asking for more men.)

WHEN: SECOND, THIRD, & FIFTH SATURDAY OF THE MONTH, 7.30pm to 11pm

WHERE: EVENTIDE AUDITORIUM, HORNIBROOK HWY., BRIGHTON

HOW DRESSY: AT LEAST YOUR SUNDAY BEST (or better)

COST: $9/PERSON

Waltz-n-tune provides:
1. SUPPER AT NO EXTRA COST
2. Great music for the range of ballroom steps popular to many venues in the Brisbane region.
3. A varied programme to suit dancers of various skill levels.

For people that have danced only occasionally, there are easy dances such as the "Festival Glide, Evening 3 step, Tangoette, Merrilyn". Everyone is encouraged to get up on the dance floor to assist each other with these relatively "easy" dances.

If you are not sure of a dance sequence and wish to try, do ask an experienced dancer. It's amazing the number of people (which includes the provider of our music) that are very keen to help others with some of their dances.

For dance sequences that you are not being actively involved with, it is quite enjoyable to listen to the music whilst watching the more experienced dancers do sequence (eg. Twilight, Saga, Riverside blues, Tangos) and non-sequence Waltz, Quickstep, etc.

Prizes:
* Lucky door prize.
* Progressive Monty Carlo prize X 2.
* Raffle & Jackpot $$ prize.

Don't miss the fun and romance on Saturday nights. Exercise by dancing with friendly people.

Come alone, or bring a partner. Enquiries: Eric 0410 411 997.

Note:
This Saturday dance also has the support of a "Beginner Ballroom Dance Class" which is held 7pm to 10pm every Monday night at the Enoggera Bowling Club, 72 Pickering St.).

(I have left this group on the Billboard, even though they have re-located from southside to northside, for those who may be searching for their notice - rather than delete it - Thanx, Noni.)

CABRA

Raising Community Awareness about the health effects of Burning wood in Residential Areas.  We are members of the community whose health has been affected by smoke and emissions from slow combustion wood heaters.  We are concerned that installations continue to be made in residential areas and used for months at a time without consideration for the health, individual vulnerability and lifestyle of neighbours.

Breathing air containing wood smoke contributes to cardiovascular problems; lung diseases like asthma, emphysema, pneumonia and bronchitis; irritation of the lungs, throat, sinuses and eyes; headaches and allergic reactions.

Would we want a return to the days of the backyard incinerator?  Why then are wood heaters being permitted in high-density housing areas when cleaner heating alternatives are readily available?  BCC reported 400 complaints last winter, Redland Shire Council reported over 80 - and most people do not lodge a formal complaint.

In addition, Environment Australia reports "In its present form this industry is unsustainable taking much more wood than is replaced and silently destroying remnant vegetation and wildlife".

If you suffer from domestic wood smoke pollution or want to learn about this issue, please look at our website http://www.rag.org.au/cabra.  You will also find links for more information.

Don't suffer in silence.  To contact CABRA please write to PO Box 74, Cleveland QLD  4163.

CLEVELAND 6 - NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

The Watch was formed in 1991.  We are an incorporated, non-profit organisation.

Newsletters, with local content and safety/security information, are distributed monthly to all residents, whether or not financial.  Meetings are held quarterly on the first Tuesday of the month, (February, May, August, November), at 7.30 pm at the Uniting Church Hall, Pt Halloran Road, Victoria Point.  All residents are welcome at these meetings, where we usually have a guest speaker on a topic relevant to Watch matters. The Annual General Meeting is held in November this year.

The aims of our Watch are:-

    ~    To maintain a Neighbourhood Watch in support of the Queensland Police

           Service;

    ~    To reduce the incidence of preventable crime within our geographic
           boundaries;

    ~    To assist in the identification and apprehension of offenders; and

    ~    To increase public confidence in the security and safety of persons and
           property.

Through the vigilance and co-operation of members and the support of the Queensland Police Service, our crime rate is low.

All members are encouraged to display NHW signage issued to them, to engrave small property items for Police identification, and to enter into the spirit of the Watch by being good neighbours, being vigilant, and recording and reporting unusual or suspicious vehicles or activities.

WHITE WREATH ASSOCIATION LTD. - ACTION AGAINST SUICIDE
White Wreath Association Inc. is an organisation supporting victims of suicide, which has several aims.  It is a non-denominational, non-political and anti-discriminatory body that will support people who have been directly affected by suicide, and those who are affected by mental illness.

Our first aim is to promote awareness by educating the public to the alarming increase in suicide deaths and mental illness within the society in which we live and the urgent need to try to combat this epidemic.  We will be holding Memorial Services to focus media and public attention onto this very serious health issue, leading to a National White Wreath Day for the Victims of Suicide on 29th of May each year.

WHITE WREATH DAY - 29 MAY

Secondly, we intend to approach governments on the urgent need to make changes to the Confidentiality Laws to acknowledge that families and carers of people with mental illness must be informed of their loved one's treatment at the time when these people are least able to care for themselves, so that family members/carers know how to care for their loved ones in their home environment.

Thirdly, we would like to remove the unfounded myths and stigmas often associated with suicide.

Fourthly, our Association is aiming to raise funds through sponsorship, fundraising events and the sale of miniature white wreaths/badges to ultimately result in the establishment of an IN-Outpatient care centre for people with mental illness where no one will be denied treatment.

Finally, we want to remind the whole of Australia that every life is precious, that these people are not just statistics but dearly loved human beings, loved by their families and carers.
