SERVING THE COMMUNITY

 Family Matters

(This article appeared in the Albert & Logan News on 10 April 2002 and has been included in the website with permission from the Author - Felicity.)

Although not everyone in a community perceives or understands the importance of a Centre in the same way, for those who need and access the services it is a conduit linking them to resources that can improve their quality of life.

A Community/Neighbourhood Centre is the building/venue from which services are provided but it is the Organisation, Management Committees and staff [paid and unpaid] who are dedicated and responsible for the operation and service delivery.

Various Government Departments such as the Australian Taxation Office, The Office of Fair Trading, Local, State and Federal Governments, Work Place Safety and Funding Bodies set the standards.  In order to operate a Community/Neighbourhood Centre, funded or unfunded, the set criteria must be met.

Community/Neighbourhood Centres are the Hub of the Community providing safe and confidential environments.  Services are flexible and accessible not only to the local communities but everyone in a catchment area.  The core business of a Centre is community focussed  - community capacity building and generating social capital, which creates a multi-functional process in the operation of such a venue.

Not only do these Centres provide assistance with emergency relief or support for families in crisis; it is also a friendly and welcoming place to share a cuppa and a story.  Referral and information services, activities and workshops are provided in response to community needs.  Networks and relationships are formed through participation and the community members are encouraged to participate.

For further information regarding services please contact a Community/ Neighbourhood Centre in your area.
